MARPOL-compliant marine waste management

Around one million tonnes of oil end up in the seas and oceans around the world every year – approx. 35% of this comes from ships. The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, aka MARPOL, was adopted in 1973 to reduce these pollution levels and prevent further oil pollution in the future. MARPOL aims to permanently minimise pollution of our seas and oceans from shipping waste and oil residue as well as to promote the protection of our planet’s marine environment.

What does the MARPOL Convention regulate?

MARPOL is an international agreement that aims to protect our seas and oceans from pollution from ships. It regulates a number of areas including how oil, wastewater and other types of waste must be handled on board the ships as well as how these waste materials must be collected and treated.

What role does MARPOL play in the marine waste management sector?

The MARPOL Convention plays a key role in marine waste management. It stipulates that shipping waste may not be discharged directly into the sea but must be treated on land in suitable plants and facilities.

Which categories of waste are covered by the MARPOL rules?

Basically speaking, the MARPOL Convention covers all types of waste that are generated by ships and must be collected for recycling/disposal. These include, among others, oil residue, bilge water, slop, tank wash water, wastewater and other kinds of hazardous or problematic substances generated from shipping operations. Six MARPOL Annexes differentiate between these materials and set out specific requirements.

Does the MARPOL Convention apply all around the world?

Yes, MARPOL is an international treaty, making it a key factor for shipping operations in many countries. It creates uniform standards for protecting our seas and oceans and is considered to be the most important international agreement for preventing pollution from ships.

Why is it so important for marine waste to be managed correctly?

Handling marine waste correctly protects our seas and oceans and helps prevent our environment from being polluted. Complying with all statutory regulations is an effective way to protect both vulnerable ecosystems and human and animal health. In contrast, using incorrect or illegal means to dispose of this waste can have a severe and long-lasting impact on our environment.

Who is responsible for disposing of marine waste?

The Polluter Pays Principle also applies to marine waste. As a general rule, therefore, it is the operator and the crew that are responsible for ensuring that all waste generated on board their ship is stored correctly and sent for treatment in line with all rules and regulations.

Working together with REMONDIS Industrie Service, we can also offer you many other hazardous waste services alongside our marine waste management portfolio.
